Art and the Patron Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Workmanship and the Patron - Essay Example In the withering coals of this world, specialists started to become stylish, making a refined situation inside culture. Specialists have been dependent upon the ethical quality, theory, and social development of their time and American craftsmen have needed to explore these systems so as to discover their place inside the social setting. Craftsmanship has needed to adjust a twofold sided card for the greater part of its reality, the declaration of the craftsman tempered by the wants of the benefactor or authority over the craftsman to direct the subject and portrayals that the craftsman employments. It is an uncommon second in time when a craftsman has genuine authority over those things that the individual wishes to portray inside their specialty. The shrouded components that are not generally evident to the benefactor or the controlling party have been one of the delights that specialists have had the option to use to communicate their individual perspective inside a directed struc ture. As time has advanced, the kinds of hold that benefactors have had over the topic and substance of the work has changed, however specialists are frequently exposed to control so as to assuage the individuals who are happy to help their work. The benefit of absolute opportunity is uncommon and has been denied to specialists even inside the desires put upon American workmanship. The idea of imaginative opportunity has been exposed to ethical quality, bootlicking, and the need to speak to subjects that fit the national logical talk. The monetary needs of the person to endure have been in pressure with the need to communicate aesthetic vision from the beginning of time. In New England in the seventeenth century, the pattern of likeness followed from England as a type of aesthetic business, specialists requiring the support of the individuals who wanted their representations to be finished by them so as to make a type of pay for their work. Fearful (1998) talks about the possibility that the idea of the picture as a business item was reliant upon an adequate number of tip top in the locale who were happy to burn through cash on such an exchange. He proceeds to talk about how gifted specialists came to American with the acknowledgment that their previous preparing and pay asset was probably going to not be gainful enough in the new land so as to get by so they had to take on other comparative work, for example, painting signs or the insides of houses. Due to the flood of settlers that were of Dutch birthplaces, there is proof of the impacts of Dutch representation style in a considerable lot of the works from the seventeenth century American craftsmen. Along these lines, there is a long history of capable and broad examinations on Dutch workmanship from American researchers (Liedtke, 2000). The impacts of Dutch representation can be found in the beginnings of a creating style in early American-European settlements as in proof by the Freake likenesses. As indica ted by Roark (2003) the Freake pictures, done by an obscure craftsman, is the biggest existing assortment of works of art from this district and from this time in American history. The works of art share comparative qualities that recommend preparing in the craft of representation just as a characterized point of view on the most proficient method to speak to the person. Fainthearted (1998) examines the idea of the artworks concerning the manner by which they offer social expressions about the subjects of the works of art, the hair of the patriarch of the family, John Freake wore his hair normally and shoulder

Oliver Twist and Therese Raquin Essay Example For Students

Oliver Twist and Therese Raquin Essay A Comparison between the First Chapters of Oliver Twist and Therese Raquin Oliver Twist and Therese Raquin are composed by Charles Dickens and Emile Zola individually. Oliver Twist is a critism towards the Victorian Times where arrangement among the high, center and low classes was extremely exacting. In the novel, the vagrant, Oliver utilizes silliness to get back on the general public. Therese Raquin is set in Paris during the 1800s. The plot rotates around Therese Raquin who has a cold marriage with a debilitated feeble man, Camille. She succumbs to his companion Laurent and they plot to slaughter Camille, bringing about a bad dream. Oliver Twist and Camille Raquin are both the primary male characters encountering low expectations for everyday comforts. Their sufferings realize the hopeless existences of different characters, this feeling of sadness in the novel is presented in the openings. In Oliver Twist the principal sentence legitimately implies the results that is going to come, into this universe of distress and troubleit stayed a matter of significant uncertainty whether the kid would make due to shoulder any name whatsoever. As of now the opening recommends an issue. The trouble of the children birth referenced accentuates the distress and inconvenience referenced before in the line. By depicting this circumstance, it likewise insights to the peruser that more issues identifying with this new conceived youngster will come. Rather than Oliver Twist the feeling of difficulty in Therese Raquin isn't presented by a circumstance however a depiction of nature. Zola utilizes despicable misrepresentation for most of the main part, On fine days in the mid year, when the roads are igniting with overwhelming sun, whitish light tumbles from the filthy coating overhead to drag wretchedly through the arcade. This subsequent passage shows the relationship among inspiration and cynicism. The whitish light from summer gives a positive inclination while the wretchedness gives a negative inclination. Despite the fact that it is a fine day, the whitish light falls will consistently convey wretchedness with it. It is implying that the delight of evacuating a difficulty might be followed or drag more difficulties alongside it. For instance, later in the novel Laurent and Therese disposes of Camille yet consequently it frequents their relationship. This affiliation is likewise made in Oliver Twist, anyway in an alternate way. The positive inclination isn't stressed by symbolisms yet the feeling of life in characters. Dickens has done this by offering subtleties to characters utilizing addresses, for instance, the delight of the specialist is communicated by, Its everything over, Mrs. Thingummy! This method causes the peruser to feel as though they are encountering the circumstance originally gave. Contrasted with Therese Raquin the characters emotions are not communicated however portrayed just, this causes the peruser to feel as though they are encountering the circumstance second gave. Zola utilizes depictions of bigger areas, gradually narrowing down to a littler spot. The section to the Arcade of Pont Neuf is trailed by the shops inside portrayals to present the characters. In contrast with Oliver Twist, the child is presented before the workhouse area and the characters there during his introduction to the world.

MIT Women Rock

MIT Women Rock One thing I like to talk about with prospective students is the fact that there are all sorts of folks at MIT. For example, there is no majority ethnicity. MIT is about 35% white, 25% asian (of some persuasion), 15% Hispanic, 10% African-American, 1% Native American, and 9% International, and our minority community provides all of the cultural resources that make MIT feel like home to anyone. We also have terrific socioeconomic diversity. 75% of MIT students graduated from public high schools, a rate that is much, much higher than many select private schools, and even a good deal higher than many state schools. Additionally, 15% of MIT students are the first generation of their family to go to college. We also have terrific gender diversity for a science and engineering school. The MIT student body is composed of about 55% male and 45% female students (and a great LGBT community, I might add). While MIT is disporportionately male when compared to the college-going population as a whole (in 2005 57% of college students were female), weve come pretty close to gender parity, certainly much closer than most science and technology schools. Im not going to name any other schools here, because many of them are trying their level best to encourage more wonderfully geeky young women to apply to their schools, but if you look around out there, youll see numbers like 20% for women, if even that. MIT women rock. (This you know, of course, from our many awesome blogger women). Theyre a strong and self-selecting group, who absolutely love science and math (as well as, like Natanya, HASS!) They include (as weve mentioned in the blogs before) blogging PhD candidates and biochemist models. All of which is really just a pretext for me to post this. Flight of the Conchords fans, enjoy!

The concept of capital market Free Essays

string(40) " which is known as Behavioural Finance\." 1. Introduction The concept of capital market efficiency can be said to be a research topic that has bring a lot of arguments and suggestions on the field of finance as a course of study. As such, it would only be expected that the wider implications of market efficiency would also be just as far-reaching. We will write a custom essay sample on The concept of capital market or any similar topic only for you Order Now Therefore, the justifications for this research undertaking may be considered to be a great task and as a result, capital market efficiency as an area of finance requires a rigorous work for scholars and as well for managers of an organization. The first time the term â€Å"efficient market â€Å"was in a 1965 paper by E. F Fama who said that in an efficient market, on the average, competition will cause the full effects of new information on intrinsic values to be reflected â€Å"instantaneously† in actual price. The efficient market hypothesis asserts that none of the techniques used by fund managers ( i.e. forecasting, valuation techniques ) can outperform the market. Arguably, no other theory in economics or finance generates more passionate discussion between its challengers and proponents. For example, Harvard Financial Economist Michael Jensen writes â€Å"there is no other proposition in economics which has more solid empirical evidence supporting it than efficient market hypothesis†. While investment maven Peter Lynch claims â€Å"efficient marketsThat’s a brunch of junk, crazy stuff† (Fortune, April 1995). The efficient market hypothesis (EMH) suggests that profiting from predicting price movements is very difficult and unlikely. The main engine behind price changes is the arrival of new information. Consequently, there is no reason to believe that prices are too high or too low. Security prices adjust before an investor has time to trade on and profit from a new a piece of information. The key reason for the existence of an efficient market is the intense competition among investors to profit from any new information. The ability to identify over- and underpriced stocks is very valuable (it would allow investors to buy some stocks for less than their â€Å"true† value and sell others for more than they were worth). Consequently, many people spend a significant amount of time and resources in an effort to detect priced† stocks. Naturally, as more and more analysts compete against each other in their effort to take advantage of over- and under-valued securities, the likelihood of being able to find and exploit such mis-priced securities becomes smaller and smaller. In equilibrium, only a relatively small number of analysts will be able to profit from the detection of mis-priced securities, mostly by chance. For the vast majority of investors, the information analysis payoff would likely not outweigh the transaction costs. The Efficient Markets Hypothesis (EMH) over this period, has witnessed widespread recognition and has found its place amongst various scholars and researchers of finance and economics. The empirical observations of Kendall (1953) thus came to be known as the ‘random walk model’ or in some instances the ‘random walk theory’ (ibid). However, this theory suggests that the share price at any one time reflects all available information, and will only change if new information arises. In this way, unpredictable news hitting the market causes share prices to fluctuate in a random and unpredictable manner. The Kendall observation is based on the fact that the market is irrational world and that the price of stock has a rampant walk. However, as Bodie et al (2001: 268) point out, in a reversal of opinion, economists concluded that the unpredictable behaviour of stock prices actually indicated an ‘efficient market’ by the very virtue of such unpredictability. Although Kendall (1953) is refer to as the father of the random walk theory, however, the actual concept of market efficiency, and indeed a ‘random walk theory’, had already been tested as many years ago as the year 1900 (Dobbins et al, 1994: 70). This was in fact the result of a doctoral thesis in mathematics written by the French economist Louis Bachelier (1900). He argues that the price of a commodity today is the best estimate of its price in the future, and therefore commodity speculation is a ‘fair game’ in which there are no winners, and wherein prices tend to follow a random walk (Pilbeam, 2005: 250-51). Subsequently, as suggested by Dimson and Mussavian (1998: 93), the 1960’s marked a transition for research concerning the unpredictable nature of stock market prices. Leading on from the findings of Samuelson (1965) and Roberts (1967), Fama (1970) summarise a comprehensive review of the random walk literature, and proposed the idea of an informationally efficient market wherein â€Å"prices always fully reflect available information† (Fama, 1970: 383). Thus, the Efficient Markets Hypothesis (EMH) was introduce into the theory of efficient market. This theory supported the random walk theory and also created a theoretical framework in which economists could perceive the unpredictable nature of stock market prices. More recently, Yen and Lee (2008) provide a chronological review of empirical evidence on the Efficient Market Hypothesis over the last five decades. Their survey clearly demonstrates that the Efficient Market Hypothesis no longer enjoys the level of strong support it received during the golden era of the 1960s, but instead has come under relentless attack from the school of behavioural finance in the 1990s. Besides the above broad review, there are other survey papers with a specific theme, for instance, Fama (1998) surveys the empirical work on event studies, with a focus on those papers reporting long-term return anomalies of under- and over-reactions to information; Malkiel (2003) and Schwert (2003) scrutinize those studies reporting evidence of statistically significant predictable patterns in stock returns; Park and Irwin (2007) review the evidence on the profitability of technical trading rules in a variety of speculative markets, including 66 stock market papers published ove r the period from 1960 to 2004. The Efficient Market Hypothesis has over the years been accepted by various scholars since its inception nearly forty years ago; however, in more recent times the Efficient Market Hypothesis has come under criticism, and as a result has been apparently undermined by the emergence of a new introduction to finance thought which is known as Behavioural Finance. You read "The concept of capital market" in category "Essay examples" The recent discussion published in Malkiel et al. (2005) clearly indicates that there is no sign of compromise between proponents of the Efficient Market Hypothesis and advocates of behavioural finance. Lo (2004) notes that useful insights can be gained from the biological perspective and calls for an evolutionary alternative to market efficiency. In particular, he proposes the new paradigm of Adaptive Markets Hypothesis (AMH) in which the Efficient Market Hypothesis can co-exist alongside behavioural finance in an intellectually consistent manner. In this new hypothesis, market efficiency is not an all-or-none condition but is a characteristic that varies continuously over time and across markets. The main contribution of this paper is to provide a systematic review on the empirical literature of evolving weak-form stock market efficiency, which is consistent with the prediction of Adaptive Markets Hypothesis. Find mat on b. Finace and adaptive The history of stock trading and trading associations can be traced as far back as the 11th century when Jewish and Muslim merchants set up trade associations. After centuries of evolution, stock markets have become the symbol of commerce in the modern world. It operates in various countries and trades a range of securities. The world stock market capitalisation is estimated to be about $ 47.7 Trillion as January, 2010. The stock market has various functions such as capital mobilisation, investing opportunities, risk distribution etc. The major stock exchanges in the world today include New York Stock Exchange, London Stock Exchange, Frankfurt Stock Exchange, Italian Stock Exchange, Hong Kong Stock Exchange and Tokyo Stock Exchange. Stocks can be defined as a collection of shares in a company. Therefore, a stock market is a place where buyers and sellers of stock meet to transact business. It is a place where exchange of shares takes place. Basically, there are two types of stock markets: Primary Market Secondary Market The primary market is the market of first sale where companies first sell their shares to the public. It is used by companies who are coming to the exchange for the first time to raise finance. The secondary market on the other hand is a market where existing or already issued securities are traded. The activities in the secondary market are usually carried out on the floors of the Stock Exchange where investors and sellers of securities meet to consummate deals through the stock brokers who are the dealing member of the exchange. The stock market is often influenced by the availability of information on the various securities traded on the stock exchange. The price of stock’s moves up and down reflecting the mood of the market, the price of stock move only when there is information in the market. The concept of an efficient market is a special application where the market price is an unbiased estimate of the true value of the investment. 1.1 A Historical Overview of Capital Market Efficiency During the 1950’s the advancement of information technology gave rise to a new founded power to analyse economic time series using various computer applications; unsurprisingly much to the fortuity of economists and business theorists alike. It was widely believed among such a community of scholars that â€Å"tracing the evolution of several economic variables over time would clarify and predict the progress of the economy through boom and bust periods† (Bodie et al, 2001: 268). A viable candidate for such experimental analyses at the time was the behavioural pattern of stock market prices over a certain time period, which, it was hoped, could be used as an indicator of economic performance (ibid). Subsequently, an undertaking of such an analytical study was conducted by Maurice Kendall (1953) who attempted to find recurring patterns in 22 UK security and commodity price indices. He unearthed results that were to open up a whole new dimension to the theory behind the behaviour of stock market prices. Hence, contrary to the then prevalent views among economists, he found that there appeared to be no identifiable pattern between stock price fluctuations, in that they seemed to move in an erratic fashion. He therefore concluded that stock prices appeared to follow a random walk (Dobbins et al, 1994: 71). The empirical observations of Kendall (1953) thus came to be known as the ‘random walk model’ or in some instances the ‘random walk theory’ (ibid). In short, this theory suggests that the share price at any one time reflects all available information, and will only change if new information arises. In this way, unpredictable news hitting the market causes share prices to fluctuate in a random and unpredictable manner. 1.2 AIMS AND OBJETIVES The aims and objectives of the study is to discuss how efficient is the stock market with particular reference to London Stock Exchange. How to Get a Job With No Experience

How to Get a Job With No Experience To get experience, you need a good job. To get a good job, you usually need†¦experience. If you don’t have either one of those right now, that’s a pretty major Catch-22, no? Before you get caught in a vicious cycle of despair over the unfairness of that conundrum, don’t panic- it is definitely possible to get a job without experience. Everyone (seriously, everyone!) has to start somewhere. No one just wakes up one day as a mid-level manager with stock options and a 401(k). Let’s talk about ways to get up and running on your career path without having tons of experience yet. 1. 3 Ways to Prepare for the No-Experience-Yet Job Hunt2. The Resume3. The Interview4. Wrapping It Up  3 Ways to Prepare for the No-Experience-Yet Job HuntBefore you start your job hunt for that entry-level position or a new-to-you career, there are things you can do to set yourself up for success, long before you even submit a resume or application.1. Know your industry.A little research goes a long way when you’re just starting out. Google the heck out of your target industry. Get a sense for what kind of company you want to work for, and what those companies are like. It’s important to look at their official websites, but also look for news, online forums, and other information that comes up as well. The corporate site can give you the official line on a company’s mission, goals, and culture, but the other sites can cut through the mist of heavy branding and give you a clearer sense of what it might be like to actually work for that company.Digging around is also a good way to get a read on how healthy your industry is. For example, if you have your heart set on becoming a graphic designer for an advertising company, but you’re uncovering a lot of stories about how big ad agencies are not doing so hot, revenue-wise, then you might want to step back and reset your expectations about the number of jobs that may be available.2. F ind your people.Networking is one of the best (if not THE best) ways to get the inside scoop on job openings or companies. Still, like with jobs in general, it’s hard to get networked in your field if you haven’t really worked in it yet. Here’s where you need to be bold and proactive. You may not be starting from nothing here- if you’ve graduated recently, chances are your alma mater has an alumni networking group, or maybe even career mentors that you can email/talk to.And there’s always social media. You don’t need experience to start fleshing out your LinkedIn profile with groups related to the industry and job you want. Start following prominent people in your field, and try to stay on top of the conversations happening around them. There’s always the good old-fashioned version of networking, where you find meetup events or open houses and show up on time, looking spiffy with a seltzer in hand and a nametag on your chest. If your f ield doesn’t have any special networking groups or events, there are plenty of sites that can help you find your career tribe. They can help link you up with the right people, in a room for cheese cubes and pleasant professional conversation with like-minded people:Meetup – Not just for Harry Potter enthusiasts and extreme knitters, Meetup brings people together professionally in addition to socially. And if you’re looking for a group that shares your passion for kayaking AND graphic design, then you might be in luck!Eventbrite – Like Meetup, Eventbrite is focused entirely on user-created events, and lets you search by keyword and location to find career-related events in your area.NetParty – Heavy on the â€Å"party,† this is one of the most popular networking sites for young professionals.Mediabistro – A portal for all things media-career-related, featuring a constantly updated job board and a heavy schedule of events and networking opportunities.Dames Bond – One of the premier career networking sites for women, according to Forbes.3. Be ready to start from the bottom. You’re probably looking for a full-time job in your chosen field, but sometimes that can be tough at the start. If that door feels stuck, look for windows. A lot of companies hire temporary or part-time employees on a project basis, or as a trial before hiring them full-time. An easy way to broaden your job search is to search for contract/freelance jobs and part-time jobs in addition to full-time positions. By doing so, you can come across really great opportunities that would have been shut out by checking the â€Å"full-time† or â€Å"permanent† box on the search form. This first job may not be The One That Makes Your Career, but it doesn’t really need to be. Ideally, you want something that will help you build your bona fides, which you can use on the path to the job you really, really want.Don’t thin k that landing anything but a full-time job in your chosen career path is a distraction from or a sacrifice of your short-term career goals. In reality, you’re building a better resume, and repositioning yourself as someone with more experience than you brought in.The ResumeI’ll be honest: the resume is the trickiest part of the job hunt when you don’t yet have a lot of experience under your belt. Resume readers (of the human or computer variety) are big on keywords and bullet points. And if your resume is little more than your name, address, education, and high school summer jobs right now, you need to bulk it up, or risk being skipped over completely by someone (or some machine) who doesn’t understand how awesome you are, and how much you’ll bring to the table.Format WiselyThe traditional resume format, the old standby â€Å"reverse chronological† (which lists your experience, moving backward through your career) can be very unforgiving to someone who is just starting out, or who is looking to change careers. We’ve got you covered on how to write a resume, but first you need to figure out the best format for what you want to emphasize.Without experience, your best friend might be the skills-based resume, where instead of listing your jobs and experience first, your skills are front and center. Business Insider has a handy sample to show how a candidate with limited experience can frame those skills and building blocks in a cohesive resume: The most important thing to remember is that although you might not have a ton of career-specific experience yet, you definitely have skills. Be sure to pull anything you can use into your resume- skills, volunteer experience, internships, etc. Even if they’re not directly related to the job you want, each one contributed to your overall skill set. You want to be able to show that you have the tools to get the job done, even if you’re not super-experienced.The InterviewSo someone saw your resume, and saw that you have great potential for this job. Next battle: the interview. Let’s say you’ve done your homework on the company; you’ve dry-cleaned your best suit; you’ve practiced your handshake and your most confident â€Å"hire me† smile in the mirror; you have a list of questions ready to go. All that good work could be for naught if you get in there and are hit with one simple question that gives you pause: â€Å"Why should we hire you?† If you’re short on work experience, that question can be a very tough one, since you can’t fall back on a statement like, â€Å"Well, with my years of experience working with widgets, I know that I can increase sales by a significant amount.†To get around that awkward moment and avoid looking like a deer in headlights, come prepared with anecdotes that show how you solved situations like you’d face on the job, and bullet points about yo ur skills. Know what skills you have that will directly apply to the job you’re applying for, and practice those ahead of the interview so that you can whip them out with cool confidence on the spot. For example, if you’re asked why you should be hired as a marketing assistant, talk about the time you spent organizing social media and word-of-mouth for your club’s fundraiser in college. If you want to show your people skills, tell the interviewer about a time you brought people together to get a project done. The interviewer will already know (having your resume right in front of them) that you don’t have the most job experience. What they need to know in the interview is that you will take the experience and skills you already have, and be able to thrive in this new job. If you can sell it, they can buy it.Wrapping It UpMoral of the story here: if you don’t have experience, don’t panic. Getting that entry-level or first job in the field can be daunting, but you already have lots of great tools at your disposal to package yourself. Once you build your network, your resume, and your confidence, you’re in a much better place to go out there and get the job.Good luck!
